During the first week of this past December, the University of Nevada – Las Vegas held the annual National Finals Rodeo which is the main event or “the Big Show” for rodeo in the United States. You may not be all that into rodeo, but if you’re like me you tune in to the major championships of a lot of sports you don’t watch regularly just for the experience. I pretty much never watch football except for the Super Bowl, for example.
Like the World Series or Super Bowl, the event is usually sold out pretty quick. The casinos near by will often have special parties or events to allow those in town for the event who couldn’t get National Rodeo Finals tickets to still experience the show. I’ve never thought about it, but I’m sure there is money to be made betting on rodeos.
The NFR is based on 7 events, which awards 8 NFR championships, two of which go to each member of a team-roping competition. Also, one of the competitions is exclusive to women – barrel racing.
I’d like to attend this one year – maybe next year? If anyone wants to get a group together and go, let me know and maybe we can organize something. I’ve never been to Las Vegas, but I’m sure December would be a fun time to go since it won’t be as hot as the rest of the year.
