So for the last few years, I’ve noticed a trend: I’m no longer cool. I wasn’t all that cool to begin with – I preferred to be cool in a different way, by being a geek. Last night I was online trying to finish up an eBay transaction with a customer over the phone, and while I was fulfilling the order, an old friend from back home got online. He’s about 5 years younger than me, and ever since I can remember, he’s been more into computer than I am.
He got into this frenzied rave about how some website had been shut down because of copyright issues (it was a music sharing site that was very exclusive, and often released CDs before they came out to the general public). He was also raving about two sister sites that sprung up as soon as it went down. And then he proceeded to seem upset when I wasn’t as enthralled with it as he was.
I had to explain to him that I’m less concerned with trying to pirate music and software and movies and all that than I used to be when I was still in school. I’m no longer interested in hacking my cell phone or trying to put linux on weird hardware or installing Mac OS X on non-Apple hardware. It’s a huge time-investment to do these kinds of things, and my time is more valuable these days. Gah, I’m almost 25 and I feel so old already.
