So the rest of the day was pretty uneventful. I went to a session on Career Banding, which ended up not really telling me anything except how to figure out what our banded pay should be versus what we make now.
The other session I went to that was pretty neat was a presentation NC State did on how they are using podcasts, blogs, wikis and other Web 2.0 applications to collaborate and communicate with students in new ways. It sounded like they had gone through tough times getting their ideas rolling.
They were pretty frank and honest with us about what worked and what failed. Apparently they had tried a wiki much like we’re doing for the Help Desk at the school I work for now, and it didn’t work out. They instead went back to using the knowledgebase built into Remedy.
I met a nice lady named Sharonda there, she is the new director of IT Client Services at Elizabeth City State University, and is apparently going through some tough times getting things up to par over there. I talked to her about how she really needs a Help Desk Manager, and she asked me how much I was asking for. I didn’t realize she was saying I should come work for her, but when I did I asked if they were career banded. Apparently, her entire IT staff is banded fully, which means they get paid what they’re supposed to!
I didn’t make any plans or promises, but she was a really nice lady, and I gave her my business card.
